Kaalamegha ( Andrographis paniculata ) Introduction Kaalamegha or Kalmegh ( Andrographis paniculata ), an herbaceous annual is a much esteemed medicinal plant in Ayurveda. It was used for centuries in place of or as an alternative to antibiotics before hardcore antibiotics were evolved. It has been used primarily to treat cold, PUO and liver diseases as well as for its bitter tonic properties. It is one of the prominent ingredients in 28 different polyherbal patent formulations in vogue in the Ayurvedic system of medicine. It has been used in China, Thailand, South East Asia and other Asian countries. In 1992 Kaalamegha ( Andrographis paniculata ) was officially listed in the Pharmacopoeia of the Peoples Republic of China as a “Cold Property” herb, used to rid the body of heat as in fevers and to dispel toxins from the body.
